Can You Really Be Too Focused?
The buzz lately seems to be about using the power of attraction to attract what you need and desire. Numerous books and speakers advise us to be really specific about what we want and to stay focused on our goals.
When my husband started his Hot Air Balloon business he was really focused. He knew that by flying over the small tourist town we lived in every day would ensure a steady flow of customers. The site of the beautiful colored balloon always attracted attention and interest as many people wanted to take a ride.
Doug got up early often at three or four o’clock in the morning, to plot his course, one that would lead him directly across town. You see a balloon doesn’t have a steering wheel or a motor. The only way to navigate is too ride the different wind patterns, going up or down to change direction. He collected data from all of the towns around us and made all of the proper calculations but alas Mother Nature didn’t cooperate.
Sometimes the winds just blow you in a different direction. Have you ever been blown off course? You were going along just fine when someone a boss maybe or a co-worker, a friend or spouse threw a wrench in your plans. How did you handle it? Were you frustrated?
My husband sure was. He was determined to fly across town but no matter how hard he tried it wasn’t meant to be. After months of struggling against Mother Nature he decided to “let go”. He decided to plot a course across town but allow the winds to take him where they may.
An amazing thing happened that day! No, he didn’t fly across town; the winds blew him in a different direction again. The amazing thing was that when he landed he was like a kid in a candy store. He was ecstatic! He saw hundreds of wild turkey and deer and some of the most beautiful ranches he had ever seen. Were they there before? You bet they were but he couldn’t see them because he was only focused on flying across town. When he relaxed he began to enjoy the journey and stopped worrying about the destination.
It is important to have goals and we need to stay focused to stay on track, however when our focus is relaxed we will open to possibilities and allow new ideas to surface.
